In this article, you will learn more about customized matter types. There are several links to more detailed articles below.
Overview
Matters are available in different type that can be customised to specifically suit that type. Matter types are the mechanical engines that allow matters to function; everything that happens within a matter - from the step progression to the automatically created tasks for each matter - revolves around the configuration of these matter types.
Matter types allow you to convert your unique processes and intellectual property into usable systems that can be customized on demand.
Workflows vs. Matters - What's the Difference?
Matters are part of the main application and are used on a day-to-day basis for a number of different functions, such as accounting, billing, document storage and creating file notes.
Workflows, on the other hand, are the collections of settings that allow these matters to be used in the way that they are. Every unique matter type is based on a corresponding workflow. In fact, within the context of Actionstep, 'workflow' and 'matter type' are synonymous and interchangeable.
You will often see the phrases 'matter level' and 'workflow level'. The distinction between the two is that changes that occur at a 'matter level' will only affect the specified matters, whereas changes that occur at a 'workflow level' will affect all matters of that type.
For example, if your firm specialized in Estate Law and Conveyancing, you would want to create two workflows to be able to create Estate Law matters and Conveyancing matters.
Installing Workflows
For information on creating new matter types, please refer to this dedicated article.
Aside from creating your own matter types, you can install pre-configured matter types from Actionstep's Marketplace.
Some of these Matter types will be published by third-party copyright holders, and a charge may be involved. There are also many free workflows that will greatly reduce the amount of time you have to spend creating your own.
