Overview
In this article, we'll review the process of customizing system role permissions by Matter Type.
Express
This functionality is not currently available in Actionstep's Express product.
Practice Pro
Admin>Users & Permissions> System Roles
Select the system role whose permissions you would like to edit
You cannot edit the Administrator role's ability to access Matter Types
Under "Application Permissions" change the Workflow permission to "Custom"
Once selected you will see a list of available matter types as well as a "Permission" and "When" column.
None | Has no access to this matter type. Will not be able to search for matters of this type or see them in list views. This matter type will not appear as an option for the user to create. |
Read | Can search for matters of this type and see them in list views. Can view the step history. This matter type will not appear as an option for the user to create. |
Write | Has all of the permissions included in "Read" as well as the ability to create matters and move steps. |
Full | Has all of the permissions included in "Write" as well as the ability to delete and restrict matters. |
Always | The permissions for this system role are only limited by the corresponding entry in the "permission" column. |
Assignee | permission defined in the "permission" column+the matter must be assigned to that user |
Party | permission defined in the "permission" column+the user must be a party on the matter |
Assignee or Party | permission defined in the "permission" column+the user must be a party or assigned to the matter |

Practice Pro + Accounting
Admin > Permissions > System Roles > Tick the box beside the System Role you want to edit > Select Edit System Object Permissions from the tool bar that appears.
Select the system object that corresponds with the permission that you would like to revoke access for.
Read | They can view matters of this type in any lists or views that would display them and they can search for and open any matter of this type in the quick search window |
Create | When creating a new matter they can see this Matter Type as one of the options they can choose |
Modify | They can make changes to a matter once opened |
Delete | They can delete a matter of this type |
Restrict |
They can restrict a matter of this type. Restricting will mean that that user, the one who is restricting the matter, is the only person on the system who can access that matter. That user can nominate other users who will be able to access it. Users with full administration permission cannot see a restricted matter unless the user who set that restriction allows them to. |
