In this article, we will cover some of the common factors surrounding system performance and slowness.
Overview
Actionstep is cloud-based and therefore relies on a browser to function. This means that performance issues can largely be divided into two broad categories:
- Internet Connectivity
- Database Server Performance
Checking Internet Speed
To determine whether or not your local internet connection is causing slowness, it is recommended that you run a speed test through your browser. We recommend Chrome's own speed test, hosted by M-Lab.
Optimizing System Performance
In many instances, slowness and timeouts occur during:
- The generation of large reports
- The loading of large custom data collections or list views
- Matters with many documents associated with them
To partially alleviate some of these problems and therefore optimize system performance, it is recommended that you:
- Limit the results of report queries by applying more specific filters
- Apply filters to list views [1]
- Use the ‘list view’ function within the Matter Documents section when navigating matters with many documents associated to them
- Limit the number of emails entering the system [2]
[1] This will help reduce the size of the list views and is good practice in general for finding relevant information quickly. You can save multiple filters against each list view for convenience and optimization.
[2] Actionstep’s pop3 email downloader functions off two unique timers. One timer counts to 30 seconds – the downloader collects all the emails it can during that 30-second window, and this recurs in 5-minute intervals. The other counter is numerical and counts to 50. If more than 50 emails need to be retrieved in one window, the remaining emails will be retrieved in the next window, after the 5-minute interval.
