File notes are an important part of keeping your life organised. In Actionstep they get used for updates, the status of a matter, important information, compliance requirements, all sorts of information. And ofter you want to be able to report on those file notes.
In this article, you will learn about three ways that you can get the information in your file notes out of Actionstep so you can report on them.
Printing File Notes
When you hover over a file note you will see three options appear to the right of that note. One of these allows you to print that note. Clicking the print icon will print off the file note that the print icon was on.
The printed page will also include details of the matter to give your file note context.

Just beside the print icon is a tick box. You can tick this box against any number of file notes on the matter to be able to print all the selected options. If you want to provide your client or a third party with selected file notes, this is the best option.
The Matter Summary Report
The Matter Summary Report is found under the reports icon on your matter. When you run it, you can choose to show the following:
-
File Notes on your matter
-
The Participants on the matter
-
The Chronology on the matter - the changes that have been made to the matter listed in order by date)
-
Matter data - The custom data that is on the matter
Each of the four options are optional. You can show them in the report or not. You can even use the drop-downs to choose the order.
For the file notes, you also get the option to choose what order the File Notes will be listed in.
Exporting or Printing a List view of File Notes
The last option is to access the list view of file notes and to export or print those.
From the top of the File Notes screen, you can access a list view of those file notes. List views are great for filtering and sorting your information and once you have that information the way you want it, you can use the Print or Export option to be able to print them or to export them to an Excel file.
